Always check out the national park system when traveling. In South Africa they were an unexpected treasure. Because advertising and travel books tend to focus on commercial tourist attractions, I tend to forget about the national park systems, but I am determined to keep them on my radar from now on.
The most gratifying travel experience comes from seeing a country from a local’s point of view. Had we stayed in hotels, Tonya and I would have seen the tourist sights, but we would never have seen the inside of a township or a typical white neighborhood. Because of this aspect of our trip, we saw more of the “real” South Africa.
Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
